Young, Free and Simple

November 5, 2006

I’ve been in this industry now for ten years, and the thing I’m finally beginning to be happy about is the fact that most of the IT that most of us need is now as good as free.
Free. Yes, free.

Okay, there’s been a lot of free stuff out there for ages, but what’s really exciting is that some of this stuff is really great and very simple to use. And with broadband now becoming mainstream this is only going to get better and better.

Here’s the run down on stuff I use:

  • Gmail & GCalendar – every bit as good as MS Outlook, and you get it everywhere
  • Google Docs & Spreadsheets – simple alternative to MSWord and MSExcel, but do you ever use more than 5%
  • Google Reader, Google Alerts – let the internet come to you, not you to it.
  • …and all of this google stuff I get to my cellphone on www.google.com/mobile
  • …you can see I use Google a bit, eh?
  • MediaWiki, PHPBB, Joomla – combined together, an incredibly powerful and rich intranet/internet solution
  • WordPress – top of the line blogging software
  • Basecamp – beautifully simple to use project management software (OK, you pay for more than one user!)

What else do others use out there to “keep that productivity up”, and “keep those costs down?
